Alex the African Grey Parrot

Irene Pepperberg, an animal psychologist, bought Alex in 1977 from a pet store on the Northwest Side. She began a 30-year study that would change our perception of the intelligence of birds. He was able to overcome all of these challenges with his will and perseverance. He never gave up his ambition to become a professional mountain climber. He pushed on towards his goal, and eventually became one of the most well-known mountain climbers in the world.

Even after his death he continues to inspire people across the world. Free Solo is a film about Alex and his remarkable achievements in climbing. This film has received great critical acclaim, and is considered one of the greatest documentaries ever made. It has also received numerous awards including the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature in 2019.

In addition to his collaboration with Dr. Pepperberg, Alex also pioneered new avenues in the field of avian intelligence. Alex was able to sing more than 100 vocal labels for objects and actions. He was also capable of counting up to six sets of objects and demonstrated math skills that were considered advanced in the day for a bird.

He was also able communicate with other animals by using a sign language, and also had a solid grasp of grammar. He utilized an approach to training known as "rival model," which involved two trainers modeling to the bird what they wanted it to learn. The trainers changed their positions frequently so that the bird could be in a position to interact with them both and receive attention and rewards from each.

Alex was named a National Hero in 2014 by President Barack Obama after the success of Free Solo. Alex was able achieve so much in his lifetime due to his strength of character and his desire to live life on his terms.
