Lolita’s Personality

They are easily bored and find different ways to entertain themselves if their owners aren't interacting with them enough. Macaws who aren't properly socialized can become aggressive, and may even bite. It is crucial that boundaries are clearly defined so that the macaw doesn't feel threatened.

Blue and Gold Macaws, in general are active birds that enjoy playing, interacting and climb. They must spend at least two to three hours each day in the outdoors to stimulate their minds and get physical exercise. They love playing games, learning tricks, and listening to music. Lolita's care

Since the 1960s, activists have pleaded for Lolita to retire from performing tricks in Miami Seaquarium. They also have urged her to be relocated into an open-water pen. After the 1993 film Free Willy sparked public outrage over the returning of orca Keiko into the wild, those who fought for her were hopeful that Lolita would suffer a similar fate. Unfortunately, she never got the chance to return to the sea.

Lolita's captors - the Dolphin Company - have ignored the advice of a veterinarian and continue to put her in danger. They are a danger to her health by requiring her to perform for tourists. They push her to the limit with high-speed circles and head-first dives, exposing her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. Additionally, they put her in an incredibly small tank that is less than one-and-a half times the size of her natural habitat.

In 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita an aunt of theirs, pledged to work on plans with a group of Lolita supporters called Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe to transport her to eventually open water. The plan would have included a sanctuary in Washington's west coast, in which she could reside for the duration of her life, receive medical attention and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen could be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami home and surrounded by the ocean itself, not an actual concrete tank.

If the plan had been successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki) could be alive. In the wild, killers whales are social animals who are close to their family members until death. Lolita's Diet
