A robot vacuum will keep floors clean enough to reduce the frequency you have to manually vacuum. Choose a robot vacuum that has good navigation, is able to clean stairs and corners and also has an enormous bin that needs to be cleaned out every now and then.

There are models that can mop and charge themselves, which is a feature that is essential for families with pets or children. Many of the top performers in our tests have decent obstacle avoidance.

1. Roomba iRobot i3+ from iRobot EVO

The i3+ EVO and its i3 EVO sibling the i3 EVO, are identical robots, but they differ in that the i3+ comes with self-emptying features. This makes the i3+ an excellent option for those looking for an automated, hands-free cleaning experience, but aren't afraid of taking the time to empty their robot's trash bin when it is full.

Both robots are adept at picking up surface debris off hard floors and carpets, and they're excellent at moving around furniture and other obstacles. iAdapt navigation software creates smart maps of your home, which help the i3+ EVO navigate and clean in a way that maximizes efficiency. However, unlike the i7+ or other top-rated robots we tested, the i3+ doesn't have any obstacle-avoidance features, so it may get stuck on things such as socks or power cords, and it may have trouble traversing transitions across surfaces like hardwood to carpet.

iRobot recommends that you tidy the area in which the i3+ EVO vacuums prior to using it. This includes putting away any toys or clutter it might encounter. It's also a good idea to keep the bin and filter clear so they don't become clogged with dirt. If the i3+ EVO's internal bin is full or the battery is empty it will return to its docking station and automatically emptying its debris into the station's external dustbin, and then continues cleaning where it began. The battery's life span is approximately an hour and a half of constant use. It takes three hours to fully charge.

2. iRobot Roomba i7+

The iRobot Roomba i7+ is the top model of the flagship line from iRobot, and it has the most up-to-date features. It's self-charging, self-navigating, and -- the most important feature of all -- it has self-emptying bins that eliminate one of the main sources of maintenance for any best robot cleaner vacuum.

The Roomba I7+ can map rooms more efficiently with Imprint smart robot Mapping. It also integrates with the iRobot Home app to let you schedule cleaning jobs and control your robot with voice or through the app.

The i7+ is more efficient and more maneuverable in our tests than the eufy RoboVac G30. It also cleaned large pet hair pieces from all surfaces, including carpeting. The biggest benefit over the eufy, though it self-empties its dust bin which eliminates a major source of maintenance and lowers the amount of time spent cleaning.

We were also awestruck by the i7+'s integration with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant AI services that we used to instruct the robot to start, stop or pause its cleaning sessions, move itself around the room and vacuum a specific space. The iRobot Home App made it easy to connect the i7+ with these services. When connected to these services, we were able use the i7+'s voice commands like "Hey Alexa, vacuum the master bedroom." The iRobot Home App also offers options for managing i7+ settings and evaluating performance.

3. Dyson Cyclone V10

In a world full of cordless vacs that feel like minivans or buses, this small Dyson model is an old-fashioned sports car. It is powerful enough to replace a traditional stand-up vacuum in a majority of homes, but also small enough to fit on the bookcase or coffee table.

The V10 is powered by a 7-cell energy-dense Lithium-ion battery, which produces power that is not fading for 60 minutes. The advanced whole-machine filter system is able to trap allergens and then releases fresh air into your home. The specialized head uses rigid nylon bristles to drive deep into carpets and collect large dust or crumbs. It comes with three suction modes to suit the task that is being completed. It swiftly switches from handheld to floor vacuum and back again.

This model also has a dock that charges to 100% in 3.5 hours, and gives users easy access to two attachments and a wand clip. This is a major improvement over previous Dysons which require a long charge and are difficult to store.

The V10's biggest drawback is its limited run time. Its marketing claims that it can last up to 60 minutes of running time are a bit misleading as CR's tests show. This is a common battery-powered vacuum's run time. This is still enough to get rid of the majority of an average-sized house but not long enough to cover every spot (though the second time around usually can be effective). That's not to say this model isn't a good choice: It's lighter and maneuverable than older cordless Dysons, and its vacuuming performance is noticeably better on low-pile carpet.

4. iRobot Roomba 694

One of the most well-known robot vacuums, the 694 is a basic model that's a good option for those who don't want to spend too much money on a robot. It could pick up the majority of types of debris in our tests, and frequently went over the same area many times to give an efficient clean. Its flat front side helps to get into corners and along the edges of walls, which is a nice addition.

Its navigation system is smart and uses iAdapt to avoid obstacles and navigate your home, but it's not equipped with the ability to map that comes with more sophisticated models such as our top choices, the i3+ EVO and the j7+ series. As a result, it may get stuck on things like phone cords or low furniture, and it often runs out of battery power before returning to its original location.

The Xiaomi Mi robot vacuum is superior to the Roomba 694 in many ways in that it has fewer parts that require regular maintenance It also comes with an allergen-trapping HEPA filter, incurs lower costs for recurring maintenance, has more advanced automation capabilities and does a better job maneuvering itself. It also has a larger dustbin and is charged faster.

The sleek RoboVac X8 has a superior battery life than the Roomba. It also has physical boundaries strips that can be controlled using your smartphone's voice assistance. It's also more durable, has a stronger motor, and performs better on floors with bare or low-pile.

5. Samsung Jet Bot AI+

Samsung is a name that is found on all kinds of electronic gadgets for your home, so it comes as no surprise that they're one of the most reputable robotic vacuum and mop makers. Jet Bot AI+ has the most advanced onboard technology to navigate and avoid obstacles.

The app offers a variety of customization options for your robotic cleaner. These include virtual barriers, mopping levels and behavior modifications, docking frequency settings and many more. It's easy to understand and easy to use, just as is the case with other Samsung devices.

In our tests, the Jet Bot AI+ performed well on hard floors. It cleaned up 86% of dog hair (on carpet). However, it didn't do particularly well at avoiding taller objects like cords and socks which was a disappointment. It's also more expensive than the other models that we tested, and this could be a problem for some shoppers.

The smart robot vacuums vacuum has an onboard camera that is accessible through the app. You can also create a live stream from the robot's cleaning station. This feature lets you monitor your pets or children when you're away from home. The dustbin and the filter can be washed for an easy, quick clean-up. The Jet Bot AI+ comes with an automatic clean station which helps to keep the robot's bin clear and maximizes suction power.

The app makes it possible to manually steer the robot, if necessary. For example my living room rug has a darkly colored border that can trip up some of the other robots I've tested. The HRV 425BL however continued to travel across the border without registering the high point. The ability to program a weekly cleaning schedule for each week is a time-saving advantage.
